Young man on a loft bed hangs a flag in a dorm room. He wears a white flag with "Paramus Strong." Another person holds tools nearby.

As summer winds down and college move-in day quickly approaches, excitement and nerves run high, especially when it's time to transform your small dorm room into a functional, comfortable living space! Whether you're a first-year student or a seasoned upperclassman, having a well-organized dorm can make all the difference in managing stress, staying on top of studies, and enjoying campus life.

As a mom who has had not one, but two kids go through college, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to have a well-organized dorm room! At Organize With Lisa, we believe a tidy space leads to a focused mind. Here are our top dorm room organization tips to help you (or your student!) kick off the school year right:

1. Be Selective with What You Bring

When it comes to packing for college, it can be a challenge deciding what to bring. Not only is it hard to narrow down all your belongings into a dorm-appropriate amount, it can also be emotional parting with certain keepsakes or even just the familiarity of your childhood bedroom.

The new semester – whether it’s your first year at college or your final year of post-grad – is an exciting opportunity for a fresh start. Embrace this new chapter by taking only what will serve you!

2. Maximize Vertical Space & Use Multi-Function Storage

Everyone knows that with dorm rooms, space is precious! Make every inch of storage space count by maximizing vertical space and using multi-functional storage tools like the ones below:

  • Over-the-door organizers are great for storing a variety of items, including shoes, toiletries, or snacks!

  • Add stackable bins or drawers under beds or on top of wardrobes.

  • Consider bed risers to create extra room underneath for storage.

  • Choose storage ottomans that double as seating.

  • Look for desk organizers with compartments for pens, cords, and essentials.

  • shower caddy isn’t just for the bathroom—it can hold art supplies, snacks, or electronics too.

  • Use removable hooks and command strips for hanging items.

3. Divide and Conquer

Sharing a room? Setting boundaries is an important part of maintaining a healthy & happy co-living relationship with your roommate. Here’s how:

  • Make sure to define spaces to ensure a designated storage area for you and your roommates.

  • Label everything! It might feel a bit extra, but labels help—especially during busy mornings or when living with roommates. Use labels for drawers, bins, and chargers.

  • Schedule regular “reset” times with your roommate to tidy up.

  • Communicate early about shared responsibilities to avoid clutter confusion later.

4. Create Zones

When I organize kids rooms, I am always advocate for creating zones to help kids focus and stay organized. This concept is one I hope kids take with them to college as it is especially important in small spaces like dorm rooms. Creating zones can help with focus and flow! Here are some zones that you can implement in your dorm:

  • study zone with good lighting, a tidy desk, and supplies within reach.

  • sleep zone that’s cozy and clutter-free.

  • chill zone for relaxing, maybe with soft lighting or a basket for blankets.

5. Maintain with a Routine

Even the best organization won’t last without upkeep. Set a weekly “refresh” habit. This doesn’t have to be a long list a chores, but rather a 5-10 minute routine that will save you hours in the long-run.

  • Empty your backpack.

  • Toss trash and receipts.

  • Fold clothes and rehome anything out of place.

Final Thoughts from Lisa

Dorm life can be chaotic, but it doesn’t have to be disorganized. With some smart planning and a few intentional systems, your dorm room can become a home base that fuels your academic success and personal growth.
