Now that school is out and summer is officially here, you may be on the hunt for fun and unique ways to keep you and your family busy in Bergen County this summer. As a mom, resident, and professional in Bergen County for over two decades, I’ve always loved keeping up with the latest events and things to do in the area, so I got you covered! Keep reading for some summer activity inspiration for you and your family this summer in Bergen County!

1. Enjoy classic summer fun at the NJ State Meadowlands Fair

Can you think of anything more summery than an outdoor fun fair? This annual fair in East Rutherford, New Jersey is one of the state’s largest events of the year! With over 100 rides, a wide variety of free shows, and plenty of delicious festival food, this fair has something fun for everyone in the family!

2. Celebrate the 4th of July near you!

What would summer be without celebrating the 4th of July!? From your own backyard barbeque to the many events happening throughout the county, you don’t want to miss out on this year’s festivities! Of course, no 4th of July is complete without fireworks. You can catch fireworks at the state fair, but you can also find a display that is closest to you.

3. Shop local produce at Westfield’s Garden State Plaza Farmers Market

Great news if you enjoy shopping for local produce! All summer long you can enjoy fresh farm produce and special treats along with live music and plenty of activities for the whole family over at the Garden State Plaza’s weekly Farmers Market. Taking place every Sunday until late October, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy this free and family-friendly event.

4. Make the most out of our local zoo!

Did you know that the Bergen County Zoo offers a membership program? Memberships are a great way to support the zoo’s programs while also giving you and your family the benefit of unlimited free admission as well as discounts to over 130 zoos and aquariums nationwide.

While you’re signing up, don’t forget to check out their Pride Day event, a full day of music, food trucks, animal shows, and more to celebrate the county’s LGBTQ+ community!

5. Enjoy a summer of music and movies with the Bergen County Movie & Concert Series

With 26 events happening across 5 Bergen County parks as part of the Bergen County Movie & Concert Series, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy a wide variety of movies and concerts this summer! Bonus points – all events are free and open to the public. All you need is your favorite lawn chair or blanket and then just to sit back, relax and enjoy!

6. Enjoy free bowling for your kids!

Of course, not all summer days can bring the sunshine. On the days when it’s raining or just too hot to play outside, make sure to take advantage of New Jersey’s Kids Bowl Free program, which lets kids and teens bowl up to 2 free games a day. Just make sure to register for the program beforehand and to check out which bowling alleys are participating.

7. Take a Sunset Hike at Flat Rock Brook

If you and your family enjoy the great outdoors, then you’ll love taking a sunset hike over Flat Rock Brook in Englewood, NJ. Every Tuesday and Wednesday this summer, you can enjoy a leisurely walk through while meeting fellow locals! Check out Flat Rock Brook’s calendar for the latest updates.

As you see, there are plenty of fun ways to keep you and your family entertained this summer in Bergen County. Want even more ideas? Check out more of my favorite places to eat, shop and stay entertained in Bergen County on this blog post.
